Let’s Talk About Mommy Fitness Struggles and What You Can Do About Them

It’s easy to tell yourself you’ll start working out and going back to your pre-baby body. But, there may be some things still holding you back from achieving that goal.

These moms got real about the fitness struggles that almost every mom goes through after giving birth. So we asked our friends at Onelife Studio, a Pilates studio run by a team of licensed health professionals, what you can do about them! Read on to find out!

Let's Talk About Mommy Fitness Struggles and What You Can Do About Them

Mommy Fitness Struggle #1: Working through the weight gain and back pain

"What initially motivated me to start and continue exercising was my goal of reducing my weight. But I also found I've been getting back pains because of carrying my baby, changing diaper, etc. So, I wanted to get back my strength and physical well-being." - Juliet Chen

"I wanted to get back into shape, but more importantly, I needed the strength to take care of my child." - Jemmalyn Wong

Childbirth can really take its toll on a mom’s mind and body. The extra pounds you get after giving birth can lead to a lot of back pain and insecurities that can make even everyday things a challenge. But slowly easing into exercising is a great way to improve your health and strengthen your body!

Onelife Studio Solution: Exercising will help strengthen your weak spots and stretch the tight muscles that contribute to pain and injury. It will also help improve your posture, energy levels, and release happy hormones that make you feel good!

Mommy Fitness Struggle #2: Choosing the right kind of exercise

"I knew that I needed to pick the right type of exercise after giving birth because choosing the wrong kind of exercise might cause muscle damage or injury." - Jemmalyn Wong

Getting back into an active lifestyle after giving birth is no easy thing. Your body has been through a lot and will need some time to recover. That’s why it’s so important to set your goals early on and find out exactly what you want to work on. Consulting with fitness professionals about your concerns will also be super helpful in finding the right workout for you!

Onelife Studio Solution: Consult with our licensed physiotherapists and certified Pilates coaches. We make sure to explain what the condition of your body is and what your body needs. Then we set clear short term and long-term goals with you.

Mommy Fitness Struggle #3: Getting through that first postpartum workout

"My first session was met with such polarized feelings. I was elated to be in athleisure again, setting aside time, prioritizing myself, and doing something for me. Yet, I was also frustrated because I felt weak and movements that came easily before were challenging." - Patti Grandidge-Herrera

You might find yourself expecting to go through workouts the same way you did before your pregnancy. But with all the changes your body has gone through, there may still be some limitations to your movement and getting back to your fitness level pre-baby may take a while. So be sure to take it slow. Starting out with simple workouts and steadily working your way back to more intense ones will really help you build back your strength.

Onelife Studio Solution: If you push yourself too hard in the beginning, you might overexert yourself. And if you don't feel good and refreshed after a workout, chances are you won't look forward to doing it again. Simple exercises can still have a good impact on your daily life.

Mommy Fitness Struggle #4: Finding the time to exercise

"Some refer to the first 3 months outside the womb as the fourth trimester and I was very much consumed during that period. My body was healing, producing milk and breastfeeding took up a lot of my time and energy." - Patti Grandidge-Herrera

While there is absolutely no rush to get into exercising again after giving birth, it may be difficult to find the time for it with all your new responsibilities as a mom. After all, balancing a baby and your me-time can be tough. But the best way to find the time is to make the time. If you know you have a free space in your schedule coming up, book a Pilates class and make sure to schedule another one before you leave! This way, you’ll be sure to continue!

Pilates changed our lives! "I learned there is no rush to get into it right away... I am determined to keep up my routine and am looking forward to the progress ahead!" - Patti Grandidge-Herrera "Doing Pilates lets me know that my body is strong and capable, [and also] lets me challenge myself every time I come in for a session." - Jemmalyn Wong

"For me, Pilates does not only give physical benefits, it also helps me in my emotional stress and relaxation. I've been doing Pilates for almost 3 years now...and now that I'm pregnant again with my second child, I still continue and have no plans of stopping." - Juliet Chen
